Is BudgetArk really free?
Yes. There is no subscription, no paid tier, no ads, and no feature behind a paywall. An optional Tip Jar exists for people who want to say thanks, and it unlocks nothing because everything is already included. The calculators are free on this site too, no app required.
Does it work without an internet connection?
Completely. BudgetArk is offline-first, and every core feature works with your phone in airplane mode. The optional online features - bank connections, live investment prices, currency rates, partner sync, and the Tip Jar - stay off until you turn them on, and each one explains exactly what it sends before it runs.
How can it connect to my bank if there is no BudgetArk server?
You bring your own SimpleFIN or Teller credentials, and your phone talks to that provider directly over HTTPS. BudgetArk runs no aggregator and never sits in between. Imported transactions wait in a Review Inbox on your device, and nothing enters your budget until you approve it.
Where is my data stored?
On your device only, encrypted with AES-256 and authenticated with HMAC-SHA256. The key lives in the iOS Keychain or Android Keystore and never leaves the phone. There is no account to create and no BudgetArk server that could hold a copy.
Can I export my data?
Yes, in several formats: encrypted JSON backups, a full Excel workbook with live formulas that imports back in, CSV exports for tax reports and amortization schedules, and an archive of your receipt photos. Scheduled local auto-backups run on the device too.
Can I work with a financial advisor using BudgetArk?
Yes, on your terms. There is no advisor portal or shared account - nothing leaves your phone unless you export it - but the exports are built for exactly this. Hand your advisor the Excel workbook, which lays out your budget, debts, accounts, and holdings with live formulas they can work in, or a CSV of the business report or a loan's amortization schedule. The Bridge gives them your net worth and its history at a glance, and the Debt Tracker shows every balance, rate, and payoff plan in one place. When the meeting is over, nothing is left on anyone's server.
What is the Captain's Course?
A built-in money course: 24 short lessons, a few minutes each, in five chapters that follow the Build Your Ark order - Setting Sail (budgeting basics), Patching the Hull (debt: good vs. bad debt, how interest works, snowball vs. avalanche, refinancing), Stocking the Galley (emergency funds, high-yield savings, sinking funds), Catching Wind (compounding, index funds, 401(k)s, IRAs and Roth, asset allocation), and Charting Far Waters (net worth, buy vs. rent, insurance, estate basics). It lives on the Charts tab, works offline, is free like everything else, and your progress earns Ship's Log badges and rides along in backups. It is general education from the app's developer, not personalised advice.
Can I budget together with a partner?
Yes. Partner Sync pairs two phones directly over your own Wi-Fi with end-to-end encryption and no cloud relay. Mark any entry Private and it stays on your phone only.
When is the Android version coming?
Android is in closed testing on Google Play and anyone can join: join the tester group, opt in, and install - all with the same Google account you use on the Play Store. The public launch will be announced on the news page.

Three steps, using the same Google account you use on the Play Store:
- Join the tester group on Google Groups.
- Become a tester on the Play opt-in page.
- Install BudgetArk from Google Play. The listing shows "not found" until Google has processed your membership, which can take a few hours after joining the group.
Prefer to be added by hand? Email us your Play Store address. Joining the group happens on Google's site under Google's privacy policy; as the group's owner, BudgetArk can see members' addresses and uses them only to grant test access.
